Bill C-81 Moving to Senate

Good morning,

Yesterday, Bill C-81, the Accessible Canada Act, received two votes in the House of Commons. Conservative MP Alex Nuttall (Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte) presented an motion on Bill C-81 on November 22^nd asking the House of Commons to send Bill C-81 back to the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and Status with Persons with Disabilities (HUMA). This motion was defeated with the Conservatives, NDP, Bloc Quebecoise and Green Party voting for and the Liberal Party voting against. Following the vote on the motion, Bill C-81 was had it’s final vote in the House of Commons. Bill C-81 passed with all parties voting in favour. The legislation will now go to the Senate where the same process will happen.

Before becoming law, legislation must pass in both the House of Commons and the Senate in the same wording. Should the Senate make amendments to the legislation, it will need to go back to the House of Commons to vote on the proposed changes. It is anticipated that the Senate will make amendments to Bill C-81, following Senate committee study, most likely in Spring 2019.
